Family History Network The Michigan Family History
Network has transcribed in its' entirety the Michigan
Roll for the 1883 Pensioners. The transcription
includes the pension application number, surname, given name,
post office address, county, cause of disability, date of
application, amount of pension. The transcription is an as is
rendering. Surnames are transcribed as they are written in
the record. Please be aware that that record can not be
changed without altering the original record. Nor can an
addendum be added indicating that the surname is misspelled.
The 1883 Pensioners is an official record and as such can
not be amended. The database is searchable by surname,
given name and by county with partial surname. Please read
the instructions carefully in order to get the best results
out of your search. The database contains the certificate
number issued to the pensioner. The numbers should help to
more quickly locate your pensioner in the archives. The
Michigan Family History Network also has the complete 1894
Census This database has 42,544 individuals
enumerated, whereas the 1883 Pensioners comprises about 12,00
individuals. The 1894 database includes all former
soldiers living in the State of Michigan at the time of the
census. The 1890
Special Census has Alpena, Gratiot, Isabella, Missaukee,
and Presque Isle enumerations online. The 1902
Maps I found were not split by county but are downloadable
from the site in sections or as a whole map. DAR

Genealogical research at the Detroit Public Library
The Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public
Library main branch is a tremendous resource for local
information. The Burton Collection has a Biography Index
with references to information on Detroit and Michigan people
covering the end of the 19th century to about 1990. Obituaries
are included in this index. If you can't go to the Detroit
Public Library, and you know the date an obituary or death
notice was published, the library's General Information
Department will make a copy for you off the microfilm.
This department has the microfilmed copies of many local
newspapers, including the Detroit Free Press. The charge is 25
cents per page plus shipping and handling. Send your
request to: Detroit
